How to Prevent Air Leakage

Description

Many homes and offices experience air leakage due to ducts that are not properly sealed. Outside air can make its way into a building, resulting in discomfort for occupants and inefficient HVAC systems. Prime examples are cold bathrooms, inefficient kitchen range hoods and drafty rooms.

A backdraft damper will improve comfort and save energy and money by keeping unwanted air from entering a duct when a fan is not operating. This can be very beneficial in keeping outside air from being drawn into a room, or preventing the reversal of indoor air when a number of fans are joined to exhaust through a common duct.  Utilizing a backdraft damper in this manner prevents air that is being exhausted from one area from backing up into other areas connected by the common duct.

BDD spring loaded dampers fit firmly inside a rigid duct, and require no tape, screws, or tools for installation. A compressible foam gasket on the exterior of the damper provides an airtight seal in the duct. They may be mounted in any position, regardless of which way the duct work is angled, making installation a snap.  The damper should be located close to the duct discharge to prevent unwanted air from entering that duct.
