Why destratification is the first step toward a more comfortable and energy-efficient warehouse.
Are you aware that a building’s temperature increases, on average, between 0.5 and 1 degree F for every elevated foot that heat rises? On a 20-foot ceiling, there can be a 10 to 20 degree variance in temperature from the floor to the ceiling. In heating season, warm air rises and pools at the ceiling. During cooling season, air-conditioned supply air meets resistance from that same rising heat, forcing the AC to work harder than it should.
There is a solution for warehouse ventilation, and all it takes is a little thermal destratification. Thermal destratification is a way of mixing the air and reducing hot and cold spots between the floor and the ceiling.
Destratification Fans
Destratification Fans (DSF) are the most direct fix. These ceiling-mounted fans are designed to recycle the air that your HVAC system produces.
By equalizing the temperature throughout industrial and commercial facilities, destratification fans can:
- Improve occupant comfort
- Reduce temperature stratification
- Support HVAC efficiency
- Lower overall energy consumption

When HVLS Fans Make Sense
For very large open floor plans such as bulk storage facilities and distribution centers, HVLS (High Volume, Low Speed) Fans (CMX) are worth considering as an alternative or complement to destratification fans.
Because occupant comfort depends on temperature control in roughly the first six feet above the floor, a smaller number of large-diameter, slow-turning HVLS fans can cover more square footage per unit than several small destratification fans.
HVLS fans are particularly well suited for:
- Wide-span facilities
- Distribution centers
- Bulk storage warehouses
- Buildings with limited ceiling mounting locations

Temperature stratification is often an overlooked source of discomfort and energy waste in warehouses.
