Electrical components in data centers generate a lot of heat, which can reduce the overall efficiency and capacity of servers in a data center. Over time, the excessive heat can also cause electrical components to fail or shutdown. In order to prevent a breakdown, conditioned air should be supplied to the inlet of the servers. Simultaneously, hot air must be removed from the exhaust side. This will allow the servers to operate efficiently and keep electrical components well within their design limits.
A custom solution of motorized axial impellers and an in-line fan will yield the best results for data center cooling. Motorized axial impellers are used in the sub-floor to boost and supply conditioned air from the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit to the cool aisles of the racks. As the cool air enters the servers, it expels higher temperature air in the hot aisles. An in-line fan is used to return the warm air to the CRAC unit and help prevent it from re-circulating back into the server, which would otherwise reduce the cooling efficiency of the server. The size and type of fans used depend on the application; however, this approach will yield a more efficient data center, promote a longer server life and reduce the operating cost of the CRAC unit.
